Oh Boy
Other than to say we’re not really sure what to say, we don’t know what to say.The timing worked out such that we were able to wait until Julie’s birthday dinner to reveal the sex of child #2 in the same way we did for my birthday with Lola. And, as you can see, it’s a boy...If you can sense some hesitation or unbelief in my tone, I can explain. You see several weeks ago when Julie had her ultrasound that, among other things, was used to determine the sex of #2 we told the technician that we did not want to know the sex but to circle the appropriate answers to the two questions contained in the card you see above. OK, so no problem, they were happy to oblige.Right after that appointment Julie had her monthly pre-natal appointment during which the doctor became concerned that her cervix appeared to be alarmingly loose. Apparently there is an increased risk of pre-term labor in women who get pregnant before twelve months have elapsed since previously giving birth. As a result we were sent that same day to a second ultrasound specialist to get a more technical examination of just how loose she was. We reiterated to that technician that we did not want to know the sex. However, during the course of the exam, she labeled one of the still frames “L OVARY” and a second “R OVARY”.Julie and I both looked at each other and thought “shit.” Well we were both still concerned about the main reason we were there and that seemed the bigger issue at the moment. (Julie’s doctor had in fact already written her a note excusing her from work for the remainder of her pregnancy and suggested that bed rest was a very real possibility. So needless to say we were both a little scared.)So for the next two weeks we had this unspoken knowledge of what we saw and having already had a girl, we were both mentally prepared. But we maintained the fiction.November 10th, Bistro 33, Midtown Sacramento, approximately 7:00pm. Julie opens the envelope after our appetizers arrive...Holy crap. Now what.
