"Under Construction"

The template I chose for my site came with a beautiful homepage design including placeholder copy similar to what I have there now. As I did not want to delay publishing my site until it was perfect (which is never going to happen), I plugged in my own placeholder copy with the classic "Under Construction" for the main text. I liked the smaller italic copy as well so in a nod to my advisor, who always recommends using "pithy quotes," I thought I'd be clever and plug that there. (It's important to strike the right balance aesthetics and content don'tcha know.)

But as I thought more about it, "Under Construction" could actually work quite well as the main message for my site. For one, my project does begin with the reconstruction of San Francisco after the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906. Two, I think about this period as one in which gender and sexuality was also under construction. And, third, I like how it suggests that the whole project and the site are in a state of construction.

I kinda also like "pithy quote" as a the text, just to keep things a little light hearted. There is often an expectation in histories, at the start of chapters for example, that one begins with a quote and I like how this mocks that cliche a bit. Although, I do have a number of interesting quotes, like my "pearls cast before swine," that I can rotate through for the amusement of frequent visitors (which, I laugh to myself writing because that really only means me).
