A Day of Animals and Trainspotting

DSCN5779Lola and I had the day off from work and school today so we took a little trip to the Sacramento Zoo and a bike ride to the train tracks alongside the Sac State campus.Nana joined us in the morning for our zoo adventure. Lola has been around petting farm animal before but nothing like the types of zoo animals we’ve become familiar with in the books we read. We saw monkeys (Lemurs, Gibbons, and Orangutans - but we just call them monkeys), Giraffes, Tigers, Lions, Snakes, Frogs, Turtles, Penguins, and Zebras.Overall it was a fun time and modest enough in size to see most everything in just a few hours. The part about seeing animals contained in a space that is a small fraction of their natural range was a bit depressing. The four Penguins especially, which were on loan from Sea World, were in a space not fit for Koi. But, the opportunity to make a more personal and up-close connection to the animals will be valuable to Lola and Oliver’s future environmentalism and conservationalism.
After the zoo, a short nap, and lunch we hooked up the bike trailer and headed out to the train tracks to do a little trainspotting. We ended the day with an iced mocha and whipped cream at our favorite coffee joint, Tupelos. Follow the link below for a few pictures of the day’s activities.Zoo and TrainsOn a side note, while we were waiting around for the 3:27 train from Albuquerque, Lola and I got to discussing the outcome of the Democratic primaries. If you recall from a previous post, Lola and I endorsed New York Senator, Hillary Clinton. You’ll hear a lot about how many Hillary supporters are upset (bitter) about how the primaries ended, particularly the shameful way the DNC handled Florida and Michigan. But these two Hillarys are now firmly in the camp of Sen. Obama. Go Barack!
